Snack party food should be in a genre all by itself. Every time I look at this picture I get hungry. When you see a crock pot of juicy meatballs in a savory and sticky-sweet sauce on the snack table, you know it’s gonna be a good time, but this easy party food is a winner even if you’re avoiding crowds — just serve the meatballs with rice and call it a meal!
Makes 64 tiny meatballs
Note: This recipe also works really well with store-bought mini sausages (aka “little smokies”); you can also sub your favorite vegan ground meat for the ground beef and pork, or skip that step altogether and use pre-made meatballs. If you’re using frozen meatballs, just skip to step 3.
ANOTHER NOTE: You can also cook these on the stovetop — just simmer the meatballs over low heat for 15 minutes after roasting and then transfer to a chafing dish or fondue pot to keep them warm.
Ingredients
Meatballs
½ lb ground pork
1 lb ground beef or bison
1 egg
½ cup panko breadcrumbs
1 tsp soy sauce
¼ cup minced onion
1 clove minced garlic
1 tsp finely grated fresh ginger
1 tsp kosher salt
½ tsp ground black pepper
OMG! Sambal in Sweet Sambal Sauce
⅓ cup Sibeiho OMG! sambal
1 cup barbecue sauce
¼ cup honey
1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 tbsp soy sauce
2 tsp onion powder
1 tbsp finely grated fresh ginger
Method:
- Preheat the oven to 350o and line two rimmed baking sheets with foil.
- Mix the meatball ingredients until combined, then form into ¾-inch meatballs. (This is way easier if you use a 1 tablespoon-size portioner.) Place the meatballs on the baking sheet and roast for 10 minutes.
- Add the sauce ingredients to the slow cooker, then add the meatballs, taking care to make sure they’re evenly coated. Cook on low heat for 5 hours, then serve with cocktail picks or toothpicks.
